No stage adaptation can fully capture the subtle power of Henry James's exquisitely wrought gothic novella about a governess, two children, and a mysterious haunting. But this version by Jeffrey Hatcher comes close. Hatcher trims his telling down to the bare essentials—two actors on a minimal set—but wisely preserves James's elliptical, intentionally (and sometimes infuriatingly) ambiguous storytelling. Director Alison Vesley has exploited the strengths of this strategy, casting actors (Melanie Keller and Nick Sandys) who have the range and wit to take the story and run with it. Sandys, in particular, proves to be quite the chameleon, transforming in an instant from aged housekeeper to haughty country gentleman, neurasthenic narrator to neurotic little boy. —Jack Helbig
