The Transporter

Jason Statham (Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels) uses his smoldering charisma to great effect as a mercenary whose well-ordered life is disrupted after he opens a strange package he's been hired to transport. Inside lies a bound-and-gagged woman (Shu Qi), and despite his professional resolve never to get involved in his clients' affairs, he's pulled into a web of intrigue that leads to an international slavery ring. Luc Besson (The Professional, The Fifth Element) scripted this entertaining but forgettable 2002 action flick, once again centering a Hollywood-blockbuster story on a philosophical loner drawn from Raymond Chandler, Dashiell Hammett, and French noirist Jean-Pierre Melville (Bob le flambeur). Director Cory Yuen, who choreographed the action in X-Men and Romeo Must Die, adds some dazzling fights and chases, including one balletic brawl on a motor-oil slick. 92 min.
