The Tragedy of Amleth, Princess of Denmark | Dream Theatre | Theater & Performance | Chicago Reader
This is a past event.
When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through April 7 2013
Price: $17-$20
More than a simple adaptation of Shakespeare's Hamlet, this original work from Dream Theatre's Jeremy Menekseoglu stands on its own as a dark, sexy, and deeply immersive tragedy. Anna Weiler Menekseoglu is explosive as Amleth, the troubled royal teen who returns to Denmark upon her father's death to find him already interred and her mother remarried. Feeling distant from her childhood lover Ophelia (played with sweetness and unexpected resolve by Megan Merrill), Amleth grapples with isolation and anger, in addition to a sense of duty to avenge her father's death. And the royal household proves to be treacherous terrain for the immature and confused. From an amusement park to a rat-infested nunnery, Amleth's journey is an engrossing and cautionary tale; the Bard would be proud. —Marissa Oberlander
