Biography, Drama, Romance
A largely emotional portrait of a formidably cerebral figure, this biopic of theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking focuses on his 30-year marriage to Jane Wilde and his struggle to live life to the fullest despite the relentless wasting effects of motor neuron disease. The stark contrast between Hawking's extraordinary intellect and his extraordinary physical handicap has made him an object of public fascination for decades, yet the film is most striking for the fact that, apart from the practical problems of quadriplegia, the couple's relationship seems so ordinary. For all the scientific rhetoric about the nature of time, what matters most here is how it forges, and then tests, the bond between two people. James Marsh (Man on Wire) directed; with Eddie Redmayne, Felicity Jones, David Thewlis, Simon McBurney, Charlie Cox, and Maxine Peake.
