The fledgling Accidental Shakespeare Theatre Company presents an earnest, satisfying rendition of the Bard's late romance, in which a deposed duke uses his supernatural powers to wreak vengeance on those who did him wrong, only to discover the deeper wonders of forgiveness and love. Angeli Primlani's "alchemy punk" concept employs 17th-century-style costumes tweaked with modern touches by designer Kate Setzer Kamphausen. Patrick Ham's set and Benjamin Dionysus's lighting creatively transcend the limits of the tiny Heartland Studio black-box space, and Melissa Schlesinger's sound effects are truly impressive. Of the cast, only Jared McDaris—as the duke's magical slave, Ariel—has the vocal chops needed for Shakespeare's rich poetry. But the ensemble's emotional honesty makes the story's moral arc clear and moving. —Albert Williams
