Rehabbing in a psych ward after having slashed her wrists, fading art star Dana learns that her insurance won't cover more than ten days of in-patient care without a diagnosis more, um, serious than suicidal depression. So she shoots for multiple personality disorder and sets about convincing the psychiatrists that she believes she's Darryl Strawberry by memorizing the baseball legend's career stats (because psychotic breaks necessarily engender encyclopedic knowledge, I guess). The twist ending of Rebecca Gilman's idiotic 2004 play reveals nothing. Director Audrey Francis has assembled a strong supporting cast for this inaugural Step Up Productions show, wisely employing understatement against Gilman's italicized dialogue. But as Dana, Step Up artistic director Elizabeth Antonucci responds to just about everything like an aggrieved adolescent. —Justin Hayford
