Wisecracking college freshman John Cusack sets off on a cross-country road trip to California, lured by the promise of a pliant beach bunny waiting just for him; along for the ride is the straitlaced coed (Daphne Zuniga) he has an unrequited crush on, and sooner than you can say It Happened One Night, it happens. Rob Reiner directed, though it's difficult to recognize the admirably laconic mise-en-scene of This Is Spinal Tap in this hysterically oversold mix of comic cliches from the 30s and the 80s. Cusack is very funny, though his wit destroys the few shards of character that Reiner provides (can anyone this glib have so much trouble meeting girls?); Zuniga's support is winningly low-key. With Anthony Edwards.
