This documentary recounts the tragic events that occurred on the Himalayan mountain K2 in August 2008, when an international climbing team lost 11 of its 18 members over the course of a few days. Screenwriter Mark Monroe (The Cove, The Tillman Story) shapes the story like an action movie, building tension throughout the first hour with frequent, nonfatal crises and structuring the third act as a sustained climax. It's effective, suspenseful storytelling, and director Nick Ryan realizes it through a seamless mix of first-hand footage, re-creations, and talking-head interviews. At the same time, there's something unsettling about a real-life tragedy presented as an action film; that the filmmakers never acknowledge this is more unsettling yet.
