A journalist (Jim Caviezel) waiting to have his car repaired in an Iranian village is buttonholed by a middle-aged woman (Shohreh Aghdashloo) who urgently imparts to him the story (rendered in a flashback) of how her niece (Mozhan Marno) was framed for adultery by her vile husband and lynched by her rigidly pious neighbors. Based on a French true-crime best seller, this gory, ham-fisted hybrid of social-issue picture and horror film exerts a crude but undeniable power. Writer-director Cyrus Nowrasteh, best known for having scripted the controversial TV miniseries The Path to 9/11, is an arch-conservative ax-grinder, but the solid cast improbably deepens his one-dimensional characters. In English and subtitled Farsi. R, 116 min.
