The Stand4rd, Tiiiiiiiiiip

When: Thu., Nov. 20, 7 p.m. 2014
Price: $20, $16 in advance
Thanks to the success of Drake and the Weeknd, we’re seeing a lot of dark, uncomfortably personal R&B cropping up, and with the arrival of the Stand4rd, it sounds like someone has finally mastered the form. This Twin Cities “supergroup” combines the out-there, over-the-top personalities of four Internet-famous hip-hop artists into something greater than the sum of those parts. There’s producer Psymun, whose airy psychedelic soundscapes provide the music’s distinctive flavor; sharp-tongued rapper and singer Allan Kingdom, who can deliver wild, topsy-turvy verses one moment and a heartfelt falsetto serenade the next; allegedly 16-year-old vocalist Spooky Black, a do-rag-wearing white kid whose velvety pipes ooze soul; and effortlessly warm MC Bobby Raps. On the Stand4rd’s self-titled debut full-length (available free on their website), the four of them never overcrowd a song’s sonic space but instead complement one another’s idiosyncratic rhymes and mournful croons, walking a line between smooth 90s rap and synthy, outer-space R&B. Every one of these guys has blown my mind on his own this year, and when they get together everything clicks perfectly—their deep, dreamy, beautiful album is one of the year’s best. This show is the Stand4rd’s sixth live date ever. —Luca Cimarusti
