The Spy Who Dumped Me

Rated R · 116 minutes · 2018

Action, Comedy
Mila Kunis and Saturday Night Live’s Kate McKinnon star as ne’er-do-well best friends who get sucked into an international espionage plot when Kunis’s character discovers that her ex-boyfriend is a CIA operative. Susanna Fogel (who cowrote the script with David Iserson) isn’t bad when it comes to directing action or comedy, but she fails to integrate the two genres in any meaningful way. The film wobbles between violence (which Fogel generally plays straight) and laughs, and the two feel so radically different that they end up canceling each other out. McKinnon, who can be brilliant in comedy sketches, seems clueless about playing someone for the length of an entire feature; her performance is a bunch of disconnected comic riffs in search of a character. With Justin Theroux.
