Mysterious killer haunts a gothic mansion while maid Dorothy McGuire hopes for an Oscar by playing mute. Directed by Robert Siodmak, whose expressionist visual style was much better suited to gritty street dramas like Criss Cross than the higher flights of Mary Roberts Rinehart. This 1946 film is one of his least interesting; not surprisingly, it's also his best remembered. 83 min.
