The company has created some hefty obstacles for itself in the evening-length Safety in Numbers. Jeff Forrest's score is monotonous and unfeeling, with drum tracks that turn the music into aural wallpaper, and a plethora of costumes further disconnects the work's five sections, each one by a different choreographer. Space/Movement declares itself devoted to collaboration, but it hasn't created a unified vision for the piece, which is supposed to be about building "community in the urban environment." That theme is unsupported by the lackluster choreography and dancing ("unmotivated" was the word that kept coming to mind). Respite from dullness came in Maggie Koller's doll-like "Hanging Portraits" trio, with its girly gestures, and Megan Schneeberger's sometimes elegant choreography for the transitions between sections. --Laura Molzahn
