The Light Opera Works production of Rodgers and Hammerstein's classic has a fine orchestra and lavish sets, and the harmonies are sublime, especially when the nuns sing. But none of this compensates for the paper-thin characters offered by the cast, with the exception of Jamie Axtell as the talent scout/unapologetic mooch Max and, sometimes, Winifred Faix Brown as Mother Abbess. Katrina Kuntz plays Maria as if she were a young Kathie Lee Gifford, and though Larry Adams as Captain von Trapp could melt stone when he sings "Edelweiss," most of the time he's simply wooden. Through 1/1: Thu-Fri 8 PM, Sat 2 and 8 PM, Sun 2 PM, Northwestern University, Cahn Auditorium, 600 Emerson, Evanston, 847-869-6300, $27-$75. Sat 12/31, 8 PM, $43-$77. Closing.
