Erasing the Distance created this piece in collaboration with UIC's Asian American Studies program: students interviewed Asian and Middle Eastern community members struggling with mental illness, then worked with EtD associates to turn the transcripts into monologues for six professional actors, who appear here under the thoughtful direction of Reshmi Hazra. It seems initially that the process drained the blood from the stories—despite strong performances, the first three monologues feel impersonal, more like well-edited prose rather than spontaneous speech. That changes in the final three pieces, when emotional truths emerge through the imperfections and elisions of the characters' language. Adam Poss's turn as a suicidal Indian student sets a new standard for spellbinding understatement. —Justin Hayford
