Connie Nielsen stars as an American journalist in Iraq after the fall of Saddam Hussein, covering the violence and intrigue in Samarra after U.S. soldiers toss two local boys in the river. Director Philip Haas cut his teeth making documentaries, and the handheld camera and mixed cast of amateur and professional actors add realism to the story, but his attempt to convey the tangled relations between sheikhs and insurgents, occupiers and civilians is undercut by Wendell Steavenson's mightily overwritten screenplay. As a weary reporter traversing a war-torn desert, Nielsen is a tad too glamorous, even in a burka. With Damian Lewis and Mido Hamada. In English and subtitled Arabic. 106 min.
