WildClaw Theatre's adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft's 1936 novella seeks to be true to the tone, if not always the details, of its source. In the classic formula of horror fiction, a too-curious visitor arrives in a mysterious town and discovers an eerie and gruesome secret. In this case, it's that the townsfolk are descendants of amphibious sea monsters that have mated with humans—and that they practice ritual sacrifice to their pagan god. Creepy design (lighting by Heather Gilbert, set by John Ross Wilson, and sound by Mikey Moran) compensates somewhat for the flaws in this talky, overlong show (directed by Shade Murray from a script by Scott T. Barsotti), which falls flat in the second act when the truth of Innsmouth is revealed—long after the audience already knows what's in the offing. —Albert Williams
