This is a past event.
When: Saturdays, Sundays. Continues through Feb. 22 2015
Price: $38, $28 for children
Puppeteer Blair Thomas and musician Michael Smith collaborated on this charming Chicago Children’s Theatre adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s tale about a giant who bans kids from his garden, thereby inadvertently banning spring as well. Accompanying himself on guitar, Smith wryly supplies sung narration and entertaining riffs on the original story, while the hard-working Sam Deutsch brings to life a gorgeous assortment of wood, paper, and cloth creations representing the giant, the kids, the garden, and the bitter north wind. The winter-hating theme recalls Thomas and Smith’s previous show, The Snow Queen, but this one benefits from a less convoluted, more uplifting story. The kids in the audience seemed to like it—though contrary to what the script says, their happiness did not bring spring. —Zac Thompson
