Seldoms artistic director Carrie Hanson shares the spotlight with two other choreographers in 3 x 3, which features three world premieres. Darrell Jones created Whiff of Anarchy, about mob behavior, in part by asking his dancers to play games cultivating what Hanson calls "a sense of immediacy, tension, aggression"--blindfolding them, for example, and designating a "killer" to dispatch the others with a touch on the back of the neck. Chilling yet empathic, Whiff of Anarchy alternates between wary inwardness--a seated dancer runs her middle finger slowly up the inside of a forearm, as if cutting it--and balls-out running. Much of Liz Burritt's resonant new Triggers takes place on, around, or under a table, used ingeniously to magnify the interactions of what Burritt calls a "strange family." She devised this series of vignettes--which includes text--in collaboration with the performers, whose characters all have backstories. And Hanson's duet, Thrift, contrasts two different meanings of the word economy: the thing that's simple and efficient and the thing that’s dire and complicated. Also on the bill: Hanson's 2007 Overflow, inspired by Hurricane Katrina and the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami.
