Few things are better for the continued health of the Chicago theater scene than bands of recent college grads setting up shop here--especially when they're creating original, idiosyncratic work. Not long out of Miami University, Genesis Ensemble debuts with an installation/performance at the uber-funky Peter Jones Gallery, combining monologues, movement pieces, music, and audience activities in an attempt to explore the impact secrets have on our lives. While much of the hour-long piece is predictable and thin--most of the secrets wouldn't raise an eyebrow on talk TV--director Lindsey Barlag draws disarmingly candid performances from the seven-member troupe, avoiding collegiate pretension in favor of artless likability. When their intellectual rigor rivals their candor, they'll be worth watching. --Justin Hayford
