The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel

Rated PG · 122 minutes · 2015

Comedy, Drama
Fox Searchlight's geezer rom-com The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (2012) grossed some $46 million, an impressive take for a niche-market release, so here comes the pointless sequel. The action resumes at the same decrepit hotel in Jaipur, India, where a collection of acerbic Brits (Maggie Smith, Bill Nighy, Judi Dench, Celia Imrie) have chosen to spend their twilight years—though Tom Wilkinson, whose character in the first movie was by far the most interesting, has moved on, ceding his place in the ensemble to silver-haired Richard Gere. The most memorable plotline, in which the Indian owner (Dev Patel) sucks up to a guest he thinks is a hotel inspector, seems to have been filched from an episode of Fawlty Towers. John Madden returns as director; with Penelope Wilton (Downton Abbey) and David Strathairn.
