Dariush Mehrjui?s 1981 Iranian film, about a dictatorial registrar at an Iranian boys? school, must have been taken as a veiled dig at Iran's religious authorities; it was banned originally, and its 1989 release was altered. In the opening scene, unruly boys trash a classroom and the registrar disciplines them. But when a student pens an eloquent protest against school conditions, the arbitrary and authoritarian registrar oversteps the boundaries of his job to suppress the article, and the school?s humane headmaster eventually appeals to a teachers' council to resolve the dispute.
