The School of Flesh

Based on a novel by Yukio Mishima, this subtly profound love story presents a dangerous romance between an older woman with money and a younger man without it. Dominique and Quentin cruelly, desperately test the limits of their passion in a series of anticlimactic events that suggest she only appears to be a victim and he an emotional vacuum. Isabelle Huppert and Vincent Martinez earn the close-ups in this dramatic antidrama, which seems to expose the compelling characters fully even as it allows them to keep their deepest feelings secret from each other and from us. Benoit Jacquot directed a screenplay by Jacques Fieschi; with Vincent Lindon.
