At Touch and Go Records' 25th Anniversary Celebration in 2006 (which doubled as that year's Hideout Block Party), a newly re-formed Negative Approach crushed a set of songs nearly as old as the label, most of which were likely written just after front man John Brannon—later of Laughing Hyenas and now in Easy Action—became eligible to vote. This isn't one of those time-to-cash-in reunions (check the Lollapalooza schedule for examples) that's reliably eviscerated in comment threads by disgusted former fans—these forefathers of midwestern hardcore punk got back together because, as Brannon put it in a 2010 Metro Times feature, "We didn't ever lose the energy and drive to show motherfuckers how it's done in Detroit. I still have that in me, and I'm still pissed-off. I still have something to say." Fuckin' A, man. The oi-infused stomper "Nothing" and the frantic thrasher "Whatever I Do" still sound so angry, tuff, and original—thanks in no small part to the inhuman fury of Brannon's gravelly vocals—that they always make me feel like I'm hearing them brand-new (except for the part where I'd be two years old). Just as kids will forever be buying shrink-wrapped copies of Minor Threat's Complete Discography and the Circle Jerks' Group Sex, Negative Approach's self-titled EP and sole full-length, Tied Down, will always be relevant. And we have Touch and Go and the bottomless pit of bile in Brannon's stomach to thank for it. —Kevin Warwick This show is the first day of a two-day festival called the Rumble. Negative Approach headlines; Murphy's Law, Coliseum, Sweet Cobra, Ensign, Rotting Out, and Focused Minds open.
