I'd be kind of interested in seeing a bad production of this play by Rinne Groff, about two women whose lives are made and broken in the early days of television. It might settle some questions for me. This delightful version, directed by John Gawlik, sometimes made me wonder whether everything I liked so much--the smart performances, the ensemble intimacy, the stretches of screwball pacing, the evocative video by Liviu Pasare, and Michael Patrick Thornton's uncanny turn as a TV writer during the McCarthy era--obscured a dirty little secret. I got glimpses of a grimmer, duller, more pretentious and didactic play, trying too hard to make its pro forma feminist case. Oh well. If they're hiding something, they've done an awfully nice job. --Tony Adler
