The River

Avenging the death of a friend, a young man (rap star Stomy Bugsy) kills a well-connected drug trafficker in Paris and flees to his native Senegal, where he assumes a new identity, meets an attractive young woman at a party, and accepts her offer of a cross-country ride. Writer-director Mama Keita demonstrates a solid command of form in this wry, minimalist road movie (2003), gradually shifting from a noir thriller to a study of power and control between the sexes: despite the man's prowess as a cold-blooded killer, his traveling companion (Aurelie Coulibaly) proves more adept at dealing with the hoods sent to terminate him. In French with subtitles. 96 min.
