In N. Richard Nash’s 1954 play, a con man named Starbuck romances bookish, unmarried Lizzie Curry while he's supposed to be cooking up a downpour for her drought-stricken western town. There are some outmoded assumptions in the script (spinsterhood, for instance, is presented as a fate worse than death) and the central metaphor comparing unused sexuality to dried-up fields is awfully heavy-handed. But director Edward Blatchford and the cast of this tenderhearted American Blues Theater production manage to neutralize those flaws by making the play less about sexual yearning than the need to have faith in something, even if it’s flimflam. Crucial to this effort is Linsey Page Morton, who plays Lizzie with an appealing combination of forthright independence and gentle longing. —Zac Thompson
