NightBlue's non-Equity revival of Mel Brooks's 2002 Broadway musical, based on his rougher but superior 1967 movie of the same name, stumbles a lot in the first act. The dance numbers seem cheap, and everyone’s comic timing is off. Worse yet, leads Tommy Novak and Ryan Stajmiger turn in uneven performances as the pair of crooked producers scheming to turn a flop show into a cash cow. Stajmiger never quite convinces as the shy, hysterics-prone accountant Leo Bloom, a role that in the movie version put Gene Wilder on the map; likewise Novak never musters the requisite amount of icky charm as Max Bialystock, a role previously played by heavies Zero Mostel and Nathan Lane. Still, in the second act, Stjmiger and Novak find enough chemistry to at least keep us mildy entertained. —Jack Helbig
