The Princess Diaries

San Francisco high schooler Anne Hathaway is so unpopular she's literally invisible to some of her classmates—the only remotely funny conceit in this trite transformation comedy. Then she discovers that Julie Andrews, who's part of the royal family in a tiny principality somewhere in Europe, is her grandmother. With Andrews as her mentor, she reluctantly becomes poised and selfless, loses her Rosanne Rosanna-Danna hairdo, and, most important, starts wearing contacts. Garry Marshall directed a screenplay by Gina Wendkos, based on a novel by Meg Cabot. 115 min.
