Comedy, Comedy drama, Drama
A suburban mom (Kathleen Turner) is nominated for Catholic Woman of the Year but fears the award will slip away if her fellow parishioners discover that her daughter (Emily Deschanel) is a lesbian and her son (Jason Ritter) is cheating on his wife. Turner, in her first starring screen role since 2000, is the whole show here, but she can't accomplish much given the dishwater script and Anne Renton's perfunctory direction. Screenwriters Paula Goldberg and Claire V. Riley might have worked their premise for serious religious introspection or flat-out farce, but instead they stick to a bland middle ground of progressive, warm-hearted comedy drama. With Sharon Lawrence (NYPD Blue) as Turner's scheming rival and Richard Chamberlain approximating an Irish brogue as the parish priest.
