For the year it initially ran--between the summers of 2007 and 2008--the People Under the Stares comedy series had the vibe of a well-kept secret. Orchestrated by local indie record label Drag City, the monthly showcase put gifted, brazenly weird comics such as Fred Armisen into the claustrophobic confines of Weeds Tavern before relocating to the Hideout for stands by the likes of Paul F. Tompkins and A.D. Miles. Comedy nerds rejoiced. Here was the Chicago home that under-the-radar national comics had lacked. There were none of the stuffy pretenses of typical comedy shows: I remember a pre-Hangover Zach Galifianakis hanging out at the bar for most of a show, then moseying on up to the stage to perform in front of a pool table. People Under the Stares was supposed to be a one-year affair, but Drag City has reconsidered and scheduled the first of what I hope will be many new Stares. The triumphant return to the Hideout features indie stars Todd Barry and Brendon Walsh, as well as Drag City's own anticomic, Neil Hamburger. --Steve Heisler
