Dariush Mehrjui directed this 1998 Iranian film about a blocked writer who returns to his family estate and discovers that a pear tree has stopped bearing fruit. A flashback to his childhood tells the story of his crush on a slightly older girl and suggests that his present block stems from this unfulfilled obsession, while a black-and-white flashback, contrasting with the golden childhood scenes, shows him as a politically active young man. By juxtaposing the three time periods, Mehrjui implies that the past influences the present, a theme other flashback films have presented less schematically and with far greater subtlety.
