Remember Scotty Iseri? He became famous about ten years ago for making paper hats out of newspapers (the Reader was his paper of choice) and distributing them to his fellow el passengers in what he called the Paper Hat Game. Now Torry Bend, an artist from Raleigh, North Carolina, has turned Iseri's game into a multimedia meditation on city life. Using puppetry, film, and a series of complex moving dioramas, Bend and her crew tell the story of how one lonely citizen transforms himself into Paper Hat Guy in order to connect with strangers on the subway. (Sadly, Bend has transposed the setting to New York.) The Paper Hat Game is strange and beautiful, evoking how easy it is to feel alone in a big city. The story moves slowly, but there's always something wonderful to look at. —Aimee Levitt
