The Out of Towners

Quite dark and bitter, considering that the screenplay is by Neil Simon, this 1970 comedy is about two dim-witted midwesterners (Jack Lemmon and Sandy Dennis) who experience all the horrors of New York in one three-day visit. Simon seems to imply that the couple deserve everything they get: it's as if he were taking out his rage on the same people who pack his Broadway shows. With Sandy Baron and Anne Meara; Arthur Hiller, forever anonymous, directed.
