Jackie Taylor's charming, often-revived 1976 musical adaptation tells the Cinderella story from an African-American perspective in which the crabby "stepmama" is a disgruntled post office employee and Cinderella herself is a sweet girl from the 'hood trying to do better. The songs in the show, many of them written or cowritten by Taylor, are witty and rousing, although a few of the more entertaining numbers are only tangentially connected to the story. The book sometimes moves too slowly, taking pains to prepare us for plot turns we already know are coming. Still the universally fine performances--Melanie McCullough is particularly good as the title character--and Jimmy Tillman's powerful band easily make up for any imperfections in the adaptation. --Jack Helbig
