Karama Has No Walls

The Oscar Nominated Short Films 2014: Documentary, program one

These three documentaries are well-intentioned but heavy-handed, leaning on sentimental music and direct-camera address. In Malcolm Clarke's The Lady in Number 6: Music Saved My Life, Alice Herz Sommer, the world's oldest living Holocaust survivor, reflects on her development as a pianist before, during, and after her time in the concentration camps. Jason Cohen's Facing Fear presents the unlikely friendship between a former neo-Nazi and the openly gay man he almost beat to death decades earlier. Sara Ishaq's Karama Has No Walls, the least manipulative of the three, recounts a horrific day in Sana’a, the capital of Yemen, when armed soldiers opened fire on a peaceful protest against President Ali Abdullah Saleh.
