Bette Davis suffers mightily as an unwed mother who gives up her child to archrival Miriam Hopkins. The setting is the postbellum south, so there are lots of crinolines to crumple. Edmund Goulding directed this 1939 feature adapted from a Pulitzer prize-winning play by Zoe Atkins. With Jane Bryan, Donald Crisp, Louise Fazenda, and George Brent as the usual indistinct masculine presence. 95 min.
