The Muppets

A recent appearance by Kermit the Frog on Saturday Night Live's "Weekend Update" reminds one that the Muppets owe their enduring popularity at least partly to their grown-up snark. Unfortunately, this comeback movie, a labor of love for mush-headed screenwriter and star Jason Segel, errs on the side of sweetness and nostalgia; except for a few good zingers from balcony dwellers Statler and Waldorf, there isn't much here for mom and dad. The plot is recycled from The Blues Brothers: when a slimy oil tycoon (Chris Cooper) schemes to tear down the old Muppets theater and drill for oil, Kermit reunites the old gang to stage a telethon and pay off the mortgage. With Amy Adams, Rashida Jones, Zach Galifianakis, and an assortment of hip celebs (Ken Jeong, Sarah Silverman, Dave Grohl, John Krasinski) in three-second cameos.
