This is the scariest movie I've ever seen. A friend asked if I could, without giving anything away, say whether the movie's claim of being based on true events—a claim made with little foundation by so many movies these days it's become a joke—was reasonable. I declined to answer, because having that question hanging in the air as you watch is part of what makes the movie so powerful. Director Mark Pellington proves he's a master of point of view; the main characters are a big-city journalist, a small-town police officer, and the sound track. Written by Richard Hatem, based on a book by John Keel; with Richard Gere. 119 min.
