100 minutes · 1940

Frank Borzage's deft, moving 1940 melodrama, further proof (if anyone needs it) of the emotional honesty that the genre was capable of. Margaret Sullavan, who found her most sympathetic director in Borzage, stars in the story of a European family driven apart by the rise of Nazism, and she has never seemed so rightly cast, projecting a stubborn courage even as she seems ready to dissolve and float away. Her costars are James Stewart, Robert Young, and Robert Stack.
