Produced by Steven Spielberg and suffering from his usual giganticism, this unofficial remake of Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House barely has time to introduce its characters (Shelley Long and Tom Hanks as a New York couple attempting to restore a suburban mansion) before the exaggerated slapstick gags have lost all sense of proportion and credibility, which cuts the heart out of what seems to have been meant as a modest, sentimental romantic comedy. Director Richard Benjamin can't sustain the requisite light touch amid all the tumbling walls, collapsing staircases, and exploding power lines; neither can he push the rather cruel comedy over the line into the nightmare zone (a la Albert Brooks) where the unrelieved awfulness would itself become funny. Alexander Godunov, Maureen Stapleton, and Joe Mantegna contribute to the general chaos.
