Comedy, Drama
The criminally underutilized actor Michael Shannon gets his first starring role since William Friedkin's Bug (2006), and once again he's the primary reason to see the result. He's characteristically riveting as a miserable, drunken private eye hired by shadowy interests (represented by the wonderful Amy Ryan) to tail a man and a young boy riding a train from Chicago to Los Angeles. Writer-director Noah Buschel is more diligent than creative in working up his noir textures, and oscillates arrhythmically between drama and Lynchian comedy. The latter works better than the former, but then doesn't jibe so well with the somber 9/11 themes, existential heavy weather, and sentimental cliches introduced in the dysfunctional third act. 95 min.
