The Meek Shall Inherit The Earth...Just as Soon as We Are Done Fucking It, Second City Training Center, at Second City, Donny's Skybox Studio. Any jackass with a high school education and a circle of friends to egg him or her on can crack wise about the morning edition of the Tribune. What you're really paying for with improv classes is insight--the ability to make the world a whole lot smaller by drawing everything into sharp focus. Ten minutes into The Meek Shall Inherit the Earth... you can tell it was written by Second City Training Center students: though the performances are admirably streamlined and cocksure, the material's bulky and thickheaded.

In this attenuated meditation on the social injustices of "the real shitty gritty real world"--as one performer puts it--the eight cast members, directed by Joe Janes, train their sights on the easiest of targets: Microsoft's evil empire, Wicker Park gentrification, suburban white kids who act like they're black. All of which are so, like, four years ago. At some point, perhaps, these performers will be able to reflect on this uneven collection and understand that political and social satire demands more subtlety. Only a breezy running joke about a sock-puppet third-party presidential candidate gets it just about right: it's so dumb it's downright smart.
