The Mask of Zorro | Chicago Reader

The Mask of Zorro

Antonio Banderas signs up for charisma lessons from Anthony Hopkins—but they just don't take. As a former masked avenger now in retirement, Hopkins mentors the neophyte Zorro, who seeks to combine revenge with some less self-interested violence against a vicious land-grabber. Banderas is supposed to be action hero, romantic lead, and clown—but the ever-shifting tone leaves the grandeur indistinguishable from the camp in this tepid swashbuckling comedy (1998). Directed by Martin Campbell; written by John Eskow, Ted Elliott, and Terry Rossio. 136 min.
