James Elly's back in the title role, but not all of the cast from last spring's Lifeline Theatre hit could join him for this remount. Still, what really propelled the original remains the same: Kate McLean's rampaging adaptation. No stately costume drama of old California, McLean’s version of the 1919 book by Johnston McCulley delivers a visceral portrait of Don Diego Vega, the seemingly effete nobleman who transforms himself into a sort of early Batman to protect the innocent and befuddle the guilty. Director Dorothy Milne's attention to detail prevents the melodrama from congealing into camp. With the audience always in the know, the evildoers seem more doomed than dangerous, which keeps the tone light, but there are plenty of twists to make you feel like the outcome can turn on the point of a rapier. It doesn't get any keener than that. --Lawrence Bommer
