Friedrich Schiller's influential 1801 take on the Joan of Arc story focuses primarily on the future saint's brief but miraculous military career, leading French forces during the Hundred Years' War. Schiller styles the girl an introspective, go-it-alone, Romantic type, full of revolutionary fervor but harboring doubts. He also makes stuff up, giving his heroine a magic helmet, an English boyfriend, and a death on the battlefield rather than tied to a stake. It's a tale both stirring and weird, but Bradley Gunter's subdued staging for Strangeloop Theatre is neither. D.J. Reed's modern-dress costumes are presumably meant to supply a sense of immediacy, but the cast's muted, colorless performances have the opposite effect. --Zac Thompson
