Joseph McGrath was a fine director in the flashy op-pop school of the 60s (Casino Royale, The Bliss of Mrs. Blossom), but he lost his way in the visually sober 70s. This 1969 film was the beginning of the end—a curdled, unfunny satire made more painful by McGrath's inappropriately jubilant style. Peter Sellers stars as the richest man in the world, who, with the help of stepson Ringo Starr, conducts experiments in human greed. From a slim novel by Terry Southern. 93 min. (though some prints are five minutes shorter).
