The Mad Doctor of Market Street

Lionel Atwill stars as the title wacko, a scientist who's convinced he can bring the dead back to life. This B movie from Universal (1942, 61 min.) was directed by Joseph H. Lewis, who would leave his mark with the perverse noir Gun Crazy (1949). Hints of that movie's delirium can be found in the early scenes here, as Atwill kills a patient in his lair and escapes on an ocean liner, though the second half takes an unfortunate detour into South Seas adventure, with phony Polynesian natives and labored comic relief from Una Merkel and Nat Pendleton.
