The Evanston and Vicinity Biennial exhibit at the Evanston Art Center is the descendant of the Art Institute's fondly remembered Chicago and vicinity exhibits. Alan Leder, the center's executive director, says the older show went by the wayside when the Art Institute decided "it wasn't so interested in promoting local artists." This year, in its 17th incarnation at the Evanston mansion on the lake, it drew submissions from 811 artists in Cook, Will, Kane, Kendall, Du Page, Lake, McHenry, and DeKalb counties. The jurors, gallery owner Monique Meloche and Museum of Contemporary Art associate curator Dominic Molon, plowed through 3,200 slides, ultimately settling on 59 works by 35 artists. To their surprise, Meloche says, the show turned out to be pretty cohesive: "It looks more curated than juried." Many of the artists they selected are young and emerging, and Meloche says there were thematic threads that carried through the work-one whole group's "diagrammatic," another large group is figurative, and there's lots of color photography with a narrative bent. The exhibit runs through July 11. This Sunday, June 6, the artists will be on hand when awards are announced at a public reception from 1 to 4. Regular hours are 10 to 10 Monday through Thursday, 10 to 4 Friday and Saturday, and 1 to 4 Sunday at the center, 2603 Sheridan Rd., Evanston. Admission is free. Call 847-475-5300.
