Playwright Douglas Carter Beane, New York's newest darling of semiwitty semiseriousness, is true to form in this 2005 comedy. Oscar-winning actor Mitchell and his hustler boyfriend, Alex, are both traumatized to realize they're, um, gay. Diane, Mitchell's cutthroat lesbian agent, believes her client's career will tank if his homosexuality becomes public. And Ellen, Alex's spoiled girlfriend, is distressed and irrelevant. If Beane had set the play in 1950, the overwrought homotrauma might have some resonance; instead it feels like a trumped-up excuse for melodramatic personal crises, obvious showbiz satire, and fleeting male nudity. Direct Evan Caccioppoli's Kid Brooklyn production features some appealing performances (Michael Manocchio gives the stereotypical golden-hearted whore Alex real depth) but it's hard to care about such a thin, dated story. —Justin Hayford
